4 Tips for a Safe Summer on the Water
There’s nothing quite like getting out on the open water during the summer. Owning a boat and taking it out is a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends. However, an accident or theft can easily ruin a trip to the lake or ocean. Here are four tips to help you stay safe—both medically and financially—out on the water this season.
Tip #1: Know the Weather
Keeping your family safe while out on the water starts with knowing what the weather conditions are. Start paying attention to the anticipated forecast a few days in advance of your excursion. While out on the lake or ocean, keep a NOAA weather radio nearby for any important updates or changes in conditions. Look for warning signs of an impending storm, such as building clouds or lightning off in the distance.
Tip #2: Stay Aware to Avoid Crashes
While it probably sounds a little too obvious, avoiding crashes is another way to have a happy and safe summer on the water with your family. Watch out for other boaters, water skiers, swimmers, and others while operating your watercraft. Take a proactive approach to boating by always paying attention to the right of way and following all recommended safety guidelines.
Tip #3: Prevent Vandalism and Theft
Sometimes staying safe isn’t necessarily about injuries; it can be about financial health. A vandalized boat is extremely expensive to repair and a stolen boat is even worse. Taking extra steps to avoid these types of incidents is important. If possible, keep your vessel out of sight when not in use, such as in a garage or storage unit. Those who are storing a boat at the dock can purchase engine locks to help prevent theft, as well. You can also protect your trailer from theft by removing one of the wheels.
Tip #4: Make Sure You Have Proper Insurance Coverage
Making sure you have proper insurance coverage for your watercraft is also important. By having a policy in place that helps repair or replace your boat if there is an accident, theft, or vandalism is a great way to ensure you are able to get back out on the water as soon as possible. Most policies are incredibly affordable and may also help you qualify for a multi-line discount with your insurance carrier.
